Campamento romano de La Carisa, Roman military settlement in Asturias, Spain.
The Roman camp of La Carisa is an ancient military settlement located in the mountains of Asturias. The site spans two fortified zones: one at Mount Curriechos summit and another at El Homón de Faro hills, linked by an old Roman road.
The settlement dates to the period of Roman expansion in northern Spain, when troops fought to control local Asturian tribes. Excavations reveal that the site functioned as a military base over several decades.
The name Carisa is linked to Roman general Publius Carisius, who led military campaigns against local tribes in this region. Visitors walking through the site can sense the connection to the conquest of these mountain lands.
The site sits at high altitude in the mountains and is reachable only on foot via hiking trails. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and weather protection, as conditions can be harsh.
Archaeologists found here a silver coin dating to around 89-90 BCE, the oldest Roman coin discovered in the Asturias region so far. This discovery shows that the site was occupied much earlier than previously thought.
