Fuerte de Isla Verde, Military fortress in Algeciras, Spain.
Fuerte de Isla Verde is a triangular fortification built on an island in the Bay of Cádiz, designed with multiple artillery batteries to command access to the water. The structure follows classic coastal defense design with cannon positions placed strategically at each corner.
The fort was constructed in the 1730s and reinforced a decade later to improve its command of the bay. These phases of development resulted in enhanced cannon placement and stronger structural design.
The fort represents Spanish coastal defense architecture, with its strategic position controlling maritime routes between the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
The best way to visit is by taking a boat tour from nearby marinas, as the island cannot be reached by car. Choose daylight hours and check the weather, as the open bay can be quite windy.
The fortress contained three specialized batteries: Algeciras Battery with four guns, Main Battery with thirteen cannons, and San García Battery with two artillery pieces.
