Mercado de abastos, Wholesale market in Algeciras, Spain

Mercado de Abastos is a wholesale market building with an octagonal floor plan crowned by a dome measuring 47 meters across. Eight pillars support this dome while a central skylight floods the interior with natural daylight.

The building was completed in 1934 based on designs by architect Manuel Sanchez Arcas and replaced an earlier market structure from 1827. This new construction became necessary as the city outgrew the older facility's capacity and layout.

This market is where locals gather daily to buy fresh produce and regional goods from vendors who have worked here for generations. The arrangement of stalls creates a social rhythm that has shaped how the community shops and meets.

The venue sits at Plaza Nuestra Señora de la Palma with good access by public transportation and parking options nearby. Inside you will find around one hundred vendor stalls operating daily where shoppers can find a wide selection of goods.

The concrete dome held the distinction of being the world's largest of its type for about 30 years until Houston's Astrodome opened in 1965. This engineering achievement from the 1930s demonstrates an early mastery of modernist construction techniques.
