Castle of Galve de Sorbe

Castle of Galve de Sorbe is a fortress situated on a hilltop with a central stone keep, four watchtowers, and an interior courtyard featuring a medieval water cistern. The structure displays typical military architecture with thick walls and defensive features built to protect the surrounding territory.

The fortress originated as a Muslim structure under Prince Juan Manuel before being rebuilt as a castle by the House of Zuniga in the 15th century. It later passed to the Dukes of Alba and remained a symbol of power in the region for centuries.

The castle walls display heraldic shields of the Zuniga and Avellaneda families, representing the noble lineages that controlled this fortification. These symbols tell the story of the powerful families who ruled here over many generations.

The fortress remains closed for interior visits, but visitors can examine its exterior architecture and defensive elements from multiple viewpoints around the site. The hillside location provides several perspectives to appreciate the construction and overall defensive layout.

The keep contains five levels with distinct medieval features, including a fireplace on the third floor and a masonry dome on the fourth floor. These construction details reveal the craftsmanship that medieval builders employed when creating this defensive stronghold.
