Castillo de Lanjarón

Castillo de Lanjarón, Medieval castle in Lanjarón, Spain.

Castillo de Lanjarón is a fortification in northern Spain with a square layout, thick walls, and crenellations along the top. It features a reinforced tower on one side and pointed arch entrances that reflect the military architecture of its period.

The fortification was built in the 12th century as a watchtower and defense structure for the region. In the 14th century, Castilian forces reduced its size significantly by dismantling portions of the original structure.

The castle walls display a blend of Moorish and Spanish building styles that you can see in the stonework and arches. Visitors notice how different construction techniques appear in distinct sections of the fortification.

Access is via marked paths from Lanjarón town center, but the limestone hilltop location requires careful walking on uneven ground. Sturdy footwear and some time to explore are important, as the path can be steep and slippery in places.

Inside the fortress, a preserved space marks an ancient cistern that supplied water to residents during extended sieges. This underground structure reveals how carefully defenders planned for long-term occupation.
