The Sierra Nevada Natural Park spans 86,335 hectares across eastern Andalusia, featuring mountains, rivers, valleys, and glacial lakes between Granada and Almería provinces.
The park area, inhabited for over 2,000 years, displays historical irrigation systems and architectural elements from Tartessians, Romans, Visigoths, and Moorish civilizations.
Twenty-five mountain villages within the park maintain traditional ways of life, with communities adapting to high-altitude conditions through terrace farming.
The El Dornajo information center provides resources about flora, fauna, and hiking trails, while the Monterrey camping area offers accommodation near Láujar de Andarax.
The natural park contains over 2,100 vascular plant species and sixty bird types, including golden eagles and griffon vultures nesting among its peaks.
