Veleta, Mountain summit in Sierra Nevada, Spain
The Pico del Veleta rises to 3,396 meters in elevation, featuring Europe's highest paved road that extends from Granada through steep mountain slopes.
The mountain's name evolved from the Arabic word Balata, meaning cliff, reflecting the centuries of Moorish influence in the Sierra Nevada region.
The IRAM telescope laboratory at 2,920 meters elevation contributes to astronomical research while attracting scientists from numerous European institutions.
Access to the summit requires proper climbing equipment between November and April, while summer visits benefit from the microbus service to Posiciones del Veleta.
The Corral del Veleta contained Europe's southernmost glacier at 37 degrees North until its complete disappearance in 1913 due to climate changes.
