Quéntar Reservoir, body of water
Quéntar Reservoir is a water storage area in Granada province built on the Aguas Blancas river to supply the region with water. The dam holds back a calm surface of water covering about 42 hectares, surrounded by rolling green hills and accessible through simple pathways.
The dam was completed in 1975 to store water from the surrounding hills and supply Granada and nearby agricultural areas. It has served for decades as an essential water management infrastructure for the region.
The reservoir is accessible via simple paths and roads, offering quiet spots for walking and taking breaks. Visitors can view the water from several vantage points and find open spaces in the surrounding area for rest and enjoying nature.
The dam uses a special curved vault design that efficiently distributes water pressure and maintains safety over decades, with engineers regularly monitoring structural changes using specialized tools. Safety gates can release excess water during heavy rains to prevent flooding downstream.
