Casa Montañés, San Cristóbal de La Laguna

Casa Montañés is a colonial mansion in San Cristóbal de La Laguna built with stone and clay walls, wooden ceilings, and galleries made of tea wood. Three courtyards sit within its footprint, with the primary courtyard containing a stone fountain and a colonnade that runs along its perimeter.

Francisco Gabriel Montañés del Castillo y Machado, a cavalry sergeant major, commissioned this residence during the 1700s. The mansion emerged during an era when local elite built grand homes to display their rank and influence in colonial society.

The building serves as the home of the Canary Islands Consultative Council and is the only autonomous institution with official headquarters in this city. Today it functions as a working administrative space, showing how colonial residences have been adapted for institutional purposes.
