Cornón, Mountain summit in Somiedo Natural Park, Spain.
Cornón is a mountain summit reaching about 2,194 meters in the Cantabrian Mountains, located within Somiedo Natural Park. Steep slopes and diverse rock formations characterize the terrain across its flanks.
The mountain has served as a natural boundary between Asturias and Castile and León since medieval times, marking territorial divisions between these regions. This geographical role shaped how political boundaries developed in the area.
Herders have long used the mountain's slopes for seasonal grazing, a practice that shapes both the landscape and the community's connection to this land. The sight of sheep grazing on the hillsides reflects a way of life that has remained central to the region.
The hike starts from Pola de Somiedo and follows the marked trail PR-AS-10, which has white and yellow blazes guiding you to the top. The path is well-signposted throughout, making navigation straightforward for most hikers.
The peak sits roughly 15 kilometers away from the next higher mountain, making it a standalone formation within the range. This separation gives the summit its own distinctive character within the larger mountain system.
