Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes, Major railway station in southern Madrid, Spain
Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes is a major inter-city rail station in southern Madrid, Spain. The complex includes a modern terminal for high-speed trains and a preserved historical building with shops and an indoor tropical garden.
The first wooden platform appeared in 1851 as the terminus of the rail line to Aranjuez. Rafael Moneo led major renovation works between 1984 and 1992, which restored the historical section and created a new terminal for high-speed trains.
The station carries the name of Madrid writer Almudena Grandes since 2022, whose novels portrayed everyday life across the capital's neighborhoods. Travelers see her name displayed on signage beside the original station title, a gesture from the city honoring an author who documented ordinary Madrid in her work.
The station links several metro lines with city buses and regional trains, making it easy for travelers to reach other parts of Madrid. Those carrying heavy luggage will find lifts and escalators connecting the platform levels and the underground metro station.
The historical building houses a tropical garden covering roughly 4,000 square meters, with around 100 plant species and 70 palm trees. Travelers can walk through the covered garden and spot turtles in the shallow pools between the plants.
