Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Gumiel de Izán

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is built with three naves of varying heights topped with ribbed vaults that create a striking interior rhythm. Multiple chapels extend from the main structure, each with detailed decorative work.

Construction took place from the 14th through the 17th century, built over remains of a 13th-century Romanesque structure that left its mark on the design. The original tower and northern facade preserve elements from that earlier period.

The church served as a way for local families to display their status through coats of arms carved into the chapel walls. These symbols remain visible today and speak to the social importance of the building in the community's life.

The church is found along Calle Aldabones 7 in the town center of Gumiel de Izán. A small museum inside displays historical objects and religious artifacts that visitors can view during a visit.

The baptistery contains a 15th-century font carved from Espejón stone with twelve pointed arches that each hold a relief of one of the apostles. This decorative arrangement is a rare example of how this specific material was worked in religious settings.
