Palacio de la antigua Capitanía General de Aragón
Palacio de la antigua Capitanía General de Aragón, Military palace in Plaza de Aragón, Zaragoza, Spain
The Palacio de la antigua Capitanía General de Aragón is a five-sided military palace with a neoclassical stone facade arranged in three sections across two floors. Triumphal arches decorated with Minerva reliefs mark the building's main entrances and give it a distinctive formal character.
Built between 1879 and 1894, the palace served as the headquarters for the regional military authority until operations shifted to Barcelona in the 1980s. This move ended its role as the seat of power for the region's military command.
The main reception hall displays ornate decorations from floor to ceiling that reflect how late 19th century military leaders wanted to present power and authority. These elaborate details show what was considered impressive and important at that time.
The building remains under military ownership and is not regularly open to the public as it houses administrative offices and residences for high-ranking officers. Visitors should check ahead to see if any public exhibitions or events are happening in the available spaces.
The main staircase features a bronze statue of General Palafox created by sculptor Dionisio Lasuén in 1891. This sculpture stands as a notable artistic work within the palace's interior.
