Palacio de los Condes de Toreno
Palacio de los Condes de Toreno, Baroque palace in Plaza Porlier, Oviedo, Spain
The Palacio de los Condes de Toreno is a baroque palace on Plaza Porlier in Oviedo featuring a large asymmetrical stone facade with decorated columns and coats of arms surrounding a central balcony above the main entrance. Inside, a courtyard with Tuscan columns and a monumental stone staircase on the right side form key interior elements.
Built between 1673 and 1675 by architect Gregorio de la Roza, the palace originally served as a residence for the Malleza Doriga family in northern Spain. Its construction reflects the period when Oviedo was experiencing significant urban growth and architectural development.
The Real Instituto de Estudios Asturianos has occupied the building since 1946, serving as a research center dedicated to Asturian cultural heritage. Visitors can observe how the palace functions today as a working institution focused on preserving and studying regional traditions.
The palace is situated on Plaza Porlier in central Oviedo and can be easily reached on foot from surrounding streets. The interior is accessible during specific opening hours for guided tours or research purposes.
Jose Maria Queipo de Llano was born within these walls before becoming a significant figure in Spanish politics who sought international support during the Wars of Independence. His early life in the palace preceded his rise to prominence in the nation's leadership.
