Fine Arts Museum of Asturias, Art museum in Oviedo, Spain
The Fine Arts Museum of Asturias occupies three historical buildings in central Oviedo: the Velarde Palace, House of Oviedo-Portal, and House of Solís-Carbajal. The collection spans paintings, sculptures, photographs, and decorative arts from medieval times to the present day.
The museum concept emerged through a Royal Decree in 1844, but it did not open to the public until 1980. This long gap between planning and opening reflects the changes Asturias experienced throughout the 20th century.
The collection brings together Spanish, Italian, and Flemish artistic traditions that shaped European art over centuries. Walking through the galleries, you encounter works that show how different regional styles influenced each other across time.
The three buildings are located close together in the city center, making it straightforward to navigate between them. Staff and clear signage help visitors find their way, even when moving between multiple gallery spaces.
About 400 artworks are on display at any given time, even though the full collection is much larger. This rotating approach means regular visitors always find something different to see on each trip.
