Puente Viejo, Abarán

Puente Viejo is a metal bridge spanning 65 meters across the Segura River with two bays supported by solid masonry pillars. The 4-meter-wide crossing accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists moving between the town and the agricultural areas beyond.

Following a major flood in 1888, the Spanish Government financed construction of a sturdy iron bridge to secure the crossing. This project was part of regional infrastructure development and provided a permanent solution connecting separated communities.

The bridge serves as a daily crossing for residents moving between the town and the surrounding orchard areas, functioning as more than just infrastructure. It remains a focal point where local life and agricultural activities intersect in the landscape.

The crossing runs between two main avenues and provides good accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists with solid walking surfaces. It is advisable to visit during daylight hours to comfortably explore the bridge and the orchards beyond it.

The metal components of the bridge were manufactured in a foundry in Valencia and transported in ten separate pieces to the site. This method was necessary to move the heavy iron elements across the transportation routes of that era.
