Monumento al Gran Capitán

This monument features a bronze equestrian figure topped with a white marble head crafted by sculptor Mateo Inurria in central Córdoba. The combination of materials gives the work a distinctive appearance, with the marble head standing out against the bronze body.

The work was unveiled in 1923 and originally stood at the intersection of Gran Capitan Avenue and Ronda de los Tejares. Its relocation to Plaza de las Tendillas later established it as a more central landmark for the city.

The statue commemorates Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, a military leader whose campaigns shaped the power of the Spanish crown in the late medieval period. Today it stands in a busy public square where locals gather, making it a meeting point rooted in historical memory.

Its location on Plaza de las Tendillas makes it easily accessible from the historic center on foot. The square itself is open and spacious, so the monument is clearly visible and approachable from multiple angles.

The marble head was modeled after an organist from San Nicolás de la Villa church, challenging local myths that attributed it to a bullfighter or historical figure. This surprising choice reveals how artistic works sometimes tell different stories than what observers might assume.
