Mercado Central de Frutas y Verduras, Madrid

Mercado Central de Frutas y Verduras is a large-scale wholesale market near the Manzanares River with a triangular footprint and modern concrete construction. The building has two floors with continuous skylights and brick exteriors designed to provide natural ventilation and light.

The market was designed by architects Luis Bellido González and Francisco Javier Ferrero and operated from 1935 onward. Operations later moved to the Mercamadrid site as Madrid's wholesale market relocated in the latter half of the 20th century.

The building served as a filming location for several Spanish films, showing how the market became embedded in local cultural memory. Its sturdy architecture and familiar layout made it a symbol of Madrid's working-class heritage.

The site is best explored on foot, as the two levels and their connections are straightforward to navigate without complicated orientation. Access is possible, though the infrastructure was primarily designed for wholesale operations rather than tourism.

The creation of the market led to the development of the Pico del Pañuelo worker housing colony in southern Madrid. This residential settlement was part of a deliberate urban transformation strategy that connected workers with their workplaces.
