The market, designed by architects Luis Bellido González and Francisco Javier Ferrero, operated from 1935 until operations transferred to Mercamadrid in the late 20th century.
The building featured in several Spanish films, including 'La vida alrededor' in 1959 and 'Los golfos' in 1960.
The structure contains two floors built with reinforced concrete, featuring continuous skylights and functional brick exteriors for optimal light and ventilation.
The market's construction led to the development of the Pico del Pañuelo worker housing colony, transforming the southern Madrid neighborhood.
