Parque de la Dehesa Boyal, park in Spain
Parque de la Dehesa Boyal is a large green space in the Villaverde district with two distinct areas. The southern section features expansive grassy fields with a central fountain and varied trees including Indian chestnuts and mulberry trees, while the northern area is a dense pine forest with over 2000 trees where squirrels roam freely.
The park opened as a public space in 1973 after the land was returned to the city administration by a forestry authority. A forest fire in 1969 damaged many trees, but the subsequent restoration and replanting efforts established the foundation for today's park layout.
The park originated as a common grazing land for livestock in Villaverde before its transformation into a public space. This history remains visible today in how local people use it as a place to gather, rest, and spend time in nature away from city streets.
The park is easily reached by bus lines 59 and 79, with a Bicimad bike rental station nearby. The paths are well-marked and mostly accessible, though not all areas are ideal for people with limited mobility.
The area is crossed by underground waters from the Arroyo Butarque, a hidden stream that shapes the park's vegetation and ecosystem. This invisible influence explains why drought-resistant plants like pines and cypress thrive so well here.
