Real Canal de Manzanares, Ship canal at Madrid, Spain
The Real Canal de Manzanares extends through Madrid, Getafe, and Rivas-Vaciamadrid municipalities, connecting different sections of the Manzanares River system.
Construction of this waterway began in 1770 under Pedro Martinengo's direction, receiving royal designation when King Carlos III acquired it in 1779.
The canal infrastructure includes preserved locks, bridges, and aqueducts that demonstrate Spanish engineering capabilities during the late eighteenth century.
The canal system offers recreational activities and educational tours along the Parque Lineal del Manzanares, accessible through public transportation routes.
Despite initial plans to connect Madrid with Aranjuez through a navigable waterway, the canal project ended prematurely due to railway development.
