Royal Pantheon of Poblet

The Royal Pantheon of Poblet is a burial chamber within Poblet Monastery containing stone tombs and monuments with carved details that showcase medieval burial art. The space features elaborate stonework and reliefs depicting the various rulers buried there.

The pantheon originated during the reign of King Pedro III, who chose the monastery as the burial place for rulers of the Crown of Aragon. The burial chamber was filled with the remains of kings and queens over several generations.

The pantheon displays the names and coats of arms of kings and queens from Aragon, visible on the walls and gravestones for visitors to see. These inscriptions and symbols tell of the power of these rulers and their connection to the monastery.

Access to the pantheon happens only through guided tours of Poblet Monastery during regular opening hours. It is advisable to wear sturdy shoes and watch for uneven stone floors in the old chambers.

The pantheon preserves a collection of burial monuments spread across multiple centuries, allowing visitors to observe how burial art evolved over time. The various stone sculptures and inscriptions demonstrate how artistic styles and craftsmanship techniques changed across generations.
