Iglesia de Santa María del Sagrario, Gothic Isabelline church in historic center, Málaga, Spain.

Iglesia de Santa María del Sagrario is an Isabelline-style church in the historic center of Málaga, built on a rectangular plan with barrel vaults carried on reinforcing arches and lunettes. The interior walls and moldings are covered in golden Baroque decoration, which creates a contrast with the overall structural simplicity of the building.

The church was built on the site of a mosque after papal authorization arrived in 1488 allowing Christian construction on the land. Work continued for several centuries, which explains why the building shows layers of different stylistic periods alongside its Isabelline core.

The word "Sagrario" refers to the tabernacle where consecrated hosts are kept, pointing to the building's role as a place of active devotion. People from the neighborhood come here regularly for daily prayer, and the space feels lived-in rather than preserved for display.

The church is an active place of worship, so visiting outside of service times gives a better chance to look around the interior without interruption. Opening hours can shift around public holidays and religious celebrations, so checking ahead before going is a good idea.

Excavations in 2020 uncovered early Christian remains beneath the foundations, showing that this spot was used for worship long before the mosque that preceded the current church. The site therefore has a layered religious history that goes back further than the building itself.
