Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Acebo, Medieval sanctuary in Sierra del Acebo, Cangas del Narcea, Spain.
The Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Acebo is a stone church in Cangas del Narcea, Spain, built in the shape of a Latin cross with a central tower. It has several side chapels fitted with altar decorations from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Construction of the sanctuary began after 1575, following a reported miraculous healing, and was completed around 1590. That event gave rise to this place of worship in the mountains of Asturias.
The sanctuary is a pilgrimage site where people gather each year on September 8th to fulfill personal vows and give thanks. Inside the side chapels, visitors can see candles, offerings, and small personal objects left by worshippers as signs of devotion.
The sanctuary sits at roughly 1,180 meters and is reached by a winding mountain road. Visitors who are sensitive to altitude or driving a low vehicle should plan the route carefully and allow extra time in bad weather.
The statue of the Virgin Mary inside the church dates from the 13th century but was heavily reworked in 1900, so the original carving and the later alterations now coexist in one single figure. Visitors who look closely can still spot signs of those later changes in the details of the sculpture.
