Santuario de la Virgen del Monte

Santuario de la Virgen del Monte is a religious sanctuary located in Bolaños de Calatrava, built on a small hill overlooking the Cuetos stream. The complex contains two separate hermitages set within a wooded landscape, creating a secluded setting for prayer and contemplation.

The original hermitage dates back to the 13th century and featured architectural elements characteristic of that medieval period. Over the centuries, it underwent several modifications and expansions as devotion to the sanctuary grew and worship practices evolved.

The sanctuary holds deep meaning for the surrounding community, who gather here during important religious celebrations and processions. On the last Sunday of April, families make the pilgrimage together, transforming the hillside into a place of shared tradition and local identity.

The sanctuary is open to visitors year-round and hosts regular religious services throughout the seasons. Being located roughly 14 kilometers from town, it is best to allow extra time for the journey and expect a quieter, more remote setting.

The sanctuary holds a notable collection of votive offerings and religious dedications left by devotees over many centuries. These personal items and prayer requests reveal the deep faith of countless local believers and their hopes for divine intervention.
