Teatro del Mercado occupies the former fish market of Zaragoza, a 1928 brick building by Miguel Ángel Navarro on Plaza de Santo Domingo. Its rectangular basilical plan has a semi-basement and two levels, with exposed brickwork on a stone plinth. The neo-Renaissance design follows Aragonese brick palaces, with semicircular arcades and deep carved wooden eaves modelled on the Lonja.

The building was completed in 1928 from designs by Miguel Ángel Navarro Pérez with the intent to merge commerce and culture in one space. Its design reflects early 20th-century thinking about multifunctional public buildings.

The name comes from its past as Zaragoza's fish market, built in 1928. Since the 1983 conversion by Daniel Olano it has hosted contemporary and experimental theatre aimed at a less traditional audience. Outside, on Plaza de Santo Domingo, stand the fountain and the statues of the muses by Francisco Rallo Lahoz.

The theatre occupies the former fish market on Plaza de Santo Domingo, in the San Pablo district, and is reached on foot from the surrounding streets. The 208-seat hall was fitted into the 1928 building by Daniel Olano in 1983, and an open-air annex was added later. The entrance stairway was originally on the north side, with a loading dock to the south.

The building has not housed a fish market since it closed; Daniel Olano converted it into a theatre in 1983, and it now seats 208. Its brick neo-Renaissance shell, with semicircular arcades and deep wooden eaves modelled on the Lonja de Zaragoza, is easy to mistake for a palace.
