Iglesia parroquial de Santiago el Mayor

Church of Santiago el Mayor is a parish church on Cesar Augusto Avenue in Zaragoza featuring a monumental facade with twin towers and a large dome topped with polychrome tiles. The building blends Baroque and Mudéjar architectural styles.

Construction began in 1625 under architect José Felipe de Busiñac on the site of the former San Ildefonso Dominican monastery. It is the only surviving structure from that original monastic complex.

Inside, Italian Baroque influences appear through the single nave design, cross-shaped layout, and geometric patterns decorating the dome and ceiling plasterwork. These artistic details become visible as you walk through the space.

The church is generally accessible during religious services held at various times throughout the week. It is best to check ahead to learn when you can visit the interior.

The tomb of Cardinal Jerónimo Xavierre, created around 1610, was moved from the original monastery cloister to the current church. This burial monument is a remarkable feature that many visitors overlook.
