Pinares de Rodeno, Protected pine forest landscape in Sierra de Albarracín, Teruel Province, Spain
Pinares de Rodeno is a protected forest area in the Sierra de Albarracín, in Teruel Province, Spain, known for its red sandstone rocks and dense pine woods. The terrain alternates between open rock formations and forested slopes at elevations roughly between 1,100 and 1,600 meters.
The area received protected status in 1995, following years of research into its landscape and archaeological finds. Long before that, the zone was home to prehistoric communities whose presence is recorded in the rock paintings found across the site.
Rock shelters in the area contain prehistoric paintings showing animals and human figures, and several of them are accessible to visitors on foot. Standing in front of these images gives a direct sense of how people once moved through and used this landscape.
Several marked trails cross the area and link small towns, with parking spots available along the way. Some paths are flat and easy to walk, while others involve steeper sections through the forest.
The red sandstone rock in this area creates soil conditions that support plants found almost nowhere else in the region, tied specifically to this rock type. These formations also give the landscape its warm color, which stands out clearly against the green of the pines.
