Caves of Zugarramurdi, Cave complex in Zugarramurdi, Spain
The main chamber of Zugarramurdi extends 120 meters in length, reaching heights of 12 meters and widths of 30 meters through limestone formations.
Between 1610 and 1611, the Spanish Inquisition conducted trials at these caves, leading to the execution of six people accused of witchcraft.
The caves serve as a reminder of Basque folk traditions, with the Infernuko Erreka stream flowing through the central tunnel of this geological formation.
Visitors can explore the caves through marked trails with information panels, requiring comfortable shoes with good grip for the 45-minute self-guided tour.
The Witch Museum, established in 2007 in the former town hospital, documents the historical events and daily life during the witch trials period.
