Pic de Cernalles is a mountain summit in the Pyrenees rising to about 658 meters, characterized by steep rocky faces and open terrain. The peak sits within a landscape of Mediterranean scrubland crossed by well-marked paths.
The summit gained importance in 1911 when locals replaced the original wooden cross with a metal one. This change made it a significant landmark for navigation and local identity.
Local traditions include men touching the copper nail at the base of the cross for fortune, while women historically made marriage vows at this location.
The trail is a marked route of about 6 kilometers for a round trip taking roughly 2.5 hours. Bring water and proper footwear since the path crosses rocky ground with little shade.
On clear days, the summit offers views stretching to the Mediterranean Sea, Mount Canigou, and the Corbières mountain range. This extended perspective across three different landscapes is what draws many visitors back.
