Phare de punta Galea

The Punta Galea lighthouse stands at a height of 8 meters on the northern coast of Spain, guiding ships at the entrance of Bilbao estuary.

The current lighthouse, built in 1950, replaced two previous structures from 1850 and 1905, moving 180 meters inland due to terrain instability.

The lighthouse forms an essential part of the maritime heritage along the Basque coastline, integrated within the historical Fuerte de la Galea complex.

With a focal height of 84 meters and a range of 19 nautical miles, the lighthouse emits three white flashes every 8 seconds.

The structure sits near geological formations called flysch, where layers of sedimentary rock create patterns along the coastal cliffs.
