Phare de punta Galea

Faro de Punta Galea is a lighthouse in Getxo on Spain's northern coast that guides ships entering the Bilbao estuary. The white structure sits on a headland and provides clear views of the surrounding coastline and passing maritime traffic.

The current structure was built in 1950 and replaced two earlier lighthouses from 1850 and 1905 that stood on the same headland. The new building was moved about 180 meters inland to avoid ground stability issues.

The lighthouse is part of the maritime heritage along the Basque coast and stands near historical military structures. Visitors can still see how this navigational aid connects to the region's defensive past.

The site is accessible on foot via well-marked paths and offers free access to the lighthouse and its surroundings. The best time to visit is during calmer weather when visibility is good so you can fully enjoy the landscape.

The headland is known for its geological formations where layers of sedimentary rock create visible patterns along the coastal cliffs. These flysch structures create a visually striking landscape that catches the eye of geology enthusiasts.
