Higer lighthouse

Higuer lighthouse is a white square tower on the coast of Hondarribia standing 21 meters tall with an octagonal section at the top. Its red-painted lantern room and glass dome form the distinctive peak of this coastal structure.

The lighthouse was completed in 1881 and replaced an older structure destroyed during the Third Carlist War. Architect Francisco Lafarga designed the new tower, which has stood at this strategic location on the Spanish Atlantic coast ever since.

The lighthouse marks an important reference point for local fishing communities in the Bay of Biscay and has long served as a familiar beacon for fishermen and sailors from the region.

The lighthouse emits two white flashes every 10 seconds visible to ships up to 23 nautical miles away. Visitors should know the location is exposed on the coast and can be quite windy, especially during storms or rough seas.

The lighthouse sits at the easternmost point of Spain's Atlantic coast and serves as the official start of the GR11 long-distance trail, which extends approximately 820 kilometers to Cap de Creus. For many hikers, this spot marks the beginning of an epic trekking journey through the Pyrenees and along the Spanish Mediterranean shore.
