Ponte dos Santos, Highway bridge between Ribadeo and Castropol, Spain
Ponte dos Santos is a modern highway bridge that spans approximately 600 meters across the Ribadeo estuary, linking the regions of Asturias and Galicia. The structure accommodates both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, providing a direct connection between the municipalities of Ribadeo and Castropol.
The bridge was inaugurated on July 29, 1987, significantly improving connections between the two regions. A major expansion occurred in 2008 to accommodate traffic demands of the A-8 motorway.
The bridge takes its name from two religious structures: the Chapel of San Roman in Figueiras and the Chapel of San Miguel in Ribadeo. These names reflect the spiritual heritage of the communities on both sides of the estuary.
The bridge is open around the clock as a public road connection available to vehicles and pedestrians. The best time to cross is outside peak hours when traffic is lighter and visibility is clearer.
Spain's postal service recognized the bridge's significance by featuring its image on a commemorative stamp in May 2013. This honor reflects how the structure became important to national identity.
