Playa de Mexota

Playa de Mexota is a protected beach in Tapia de Casariego that stretches roughly 240 meters long and 60 meters wide, bordered by natural cliffs and coastal dunes. A small islet divides the beach into two sections, each offering different swimming conditions and wave patterns.

This beach gained protected status as a Site of Community Importance due to its ecological value and the coastal ecosystems that thrive here. The designation reflects efforts to safeguard this northern coastal landscape from development.

The beach holds significance for the local maritime communities of Asturias, where fishing traditions remain woven into daily life and local identity. Visitors can observe this connection through how residents interact with the coast and the way the place is cared for over time.

There is no direct vehicle access to the beach, so you will need to walk from the nearest parking area about 3 kilometers away. This natural isolation helps preserve the beach's character, though it means planning ahead for a visit.

The wildlife and plant life here are specially adapted to the rugged coastal environment of cliffs and dunes. These species often go unnoticed by visitors but make the area ecologically distinct from more sheltered beaches nearby.
