La Sarra reservoir, خزان مائي في إسبانيا
La Sarra reservoir is a water body in the Pyrenees near Sallent de Gállego, located above 1400 meters in elevation and held back by a stone dam. Fed by the Aguas Limpias river, the lake is surrounded by dense forests of firs and beeches that extend down to the shoreline.
The reservoir was built in the 1940s after the war to harness water power for electricity generation and supply the region with electrical energy. In the early 1950s the reservoir began to fill, and since then the facility has produced power for the local population and beyond.
The reservoir gets its name from an old sawmill that once operated in this area and remains part of local memory. Today it serves as a gathering place where visitors pause to enjoy the quiet and connect with the mountains, showing how the site has transformed from an industrial location into a space for rest.
The reservoir is accessible by the GR 11 hiking trail that crosses the Pyrenees, or by car via the C-136 road toward Formigal followed by a forest road. A simple loop walk around the water covers about 2.5 kilometers and suits all ability levels with minimal elevation change.
Beyond power generation, the reservoir was designed to transport energy through pipelines to other regions, even into France, creating a cross-border energy network. Rock climbers find a face with sport climbing routes on the northern side right beside picnic tables and the river.
