Punta Abona Lighthouse, Maritime navigation lighthouse in Arico, Spain
Punta Abona Lighthouse is a navigation beacon on Arico's coast consisting of a cylindrical concrete tower about 39 meters tall. The structure displays three red stripes on a white base and has a black lantern chamber at the top.
The first lighthouse at Punta Abona began operations in 1902 to serve maritime routes between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and western Canary Islands ports. This facility became an essential navigation point for seafaring in the region.
The lighthouse embodies Tenerife's long relationship with the sea and represents the island's maritime past for local communities. Visitors can observe passing ships and the coastline from this vantage point.
The lighthouse produces three white flashes every twenty seconds with a beam reaching up to 17 nautical miles across the Atlantic. The site is accessible via Arico's coastal road and offers open views of the ocean.
The structure follows a similar design to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse on La Palma but stands about 15 meters taller, shaping Tenerife's southeastern coastline. This greater height was necessary to ensure stronger visibility for maritime traffic.
