Real Maestranza de Artillería, Military industrial complex in San Bernardo, Seville, Spain
Real Maestranza de Artilleria is a former military manufacturing site in Seville with several buildings featuring Baroque design, symmetrical floor plans, and intricate stonework on their facades. The complex houses exhibition spaces displaying historical artifacts and documents related to artillery equipment production.
The facility began in 1565 as an iron foundry operated by the Morel family and transformed into a military cannon factory in 1720. This shift made it Spain's leading center for artillery equipment manufacturing.
The factory shows how Seville became central to Spain's military strength through skilled craftsmanship and technical innovation. Visitors can still see the workshops where artisans combined traditional metalwork with industrial production methods.
The site is centrally located in Seville and accessible by public transportation, with exhibition areas easily navigable on foot. Allow enough time to explore the different halls and displays at a comfortable pace.
Before becoming a cannon factory, the complex produced metal components for the Giralda tower and other major Seville monuments. This early work reveals how the facility was artistically significant long before its military transformation.
