Santuario del Puig de Maria

Santuario del Puig de Maria is a stone sanctuary perched 330 meters (1,083 feet) above sea level on a mountain peak near Pollença, featuring a bell tower, fortified walls, and traditional Mallorcan architectural details. The complex includes the remains of a monastery with school rooms, a library, and service buildings arranged around the central chapel.

Construction of the sanctuary began in 1348, with a church established in 1355, followed by the addition of a monastery featuring school and library facilities. These expansions transformed the site into a significant religious and educational center for the region.

The sanctuary attracts pilgrims who come to venerate a statue of the Virgin Mary housed within its walls. Religious ceremonies still take place regularly, keeping this mountain shrine connected to the spiritual life of the surrounding communities.

The path climbs marked trails from Pollença village in roughly 30 minutes, with signs along the way identifying local plants and wildlife encountered during the ascent. The terrain is steep, so comfortable hiking shoes and adequate time are recommended for the walk.

In 1550, the monastery complex served as a defensive stronghold when local residents successfully resisted a major attack on the mountain. This military chapter reveals how the hilltop location provided strategic advantage during times of danger.
