Mount Calvary chapel in Pollença, Church building at Monte del Calvario, Pollença, Spain
The Mount Calvary chapel sits atop a hilltop and is reached by 365 stone steps lined with cypress trees. The structure offers open views across the landscape and stands prominently visible from the town of Pollença below.
The Knights Templar took control of the mountain after its conquest in 1229 and administered the region from this strategic location. The site later developed into a religious pilgrimage destination with the construction of the chapel.
The chapel hosts a Good Friday procession where residents and visitors carry a Christ figure down the mountainside to the Church of Virgin of Angels. This ritual brings the community together in a shared act of devotion that has been observed for many generations.
The stone steps allow visitors to hike to the summit, while a parallel road provides vehicle access for those preferring not to climb. Both routes lead to the same location at the top of the mountain.
The 365 steps correspond to the days of a year, with fourteen 10-foot (3-meter) tall crosses marking spiritual stations along the climb. This arrangement connects the physical effort of ascending with a spiritual journey.
