Carrer del Calvari, Historic stairs in Pollença, Spain
Carrer del Calvari is a steep stone staircase in Pollença, Mallorca, rising from the town center up to the Calvari chapel that sits on a wooded hill above the town. The steps are built from local stone and lined with cypress trees that run the full length of the climb.
The staircase was built in the 18th century to replace an older path that led up to the chapel already standing on the hill. The construction made the ascent more accessible for the people of Pollença who visited the site for religious purposes.
The stairs are central to the Easter procession in Pollença, when participants carry candles and religious figures up to the chapel at night. This event takes place every year during Holy Week and draws people from across the region.
Sturdy shoes with good grip are worth wearing since the steps are steep and uneven in places. If you plan to visit the chapel at the top, going early in the morning or late in the afternoon helps avoid the midday heat.
The staircase has 365 steps, one for each day of the year. This was a deliberate choice by the builders, who gave the climb a symbolic meaning beyond simple access to the chapel.
