Monastery of San Xusto de Toxosoutos, Medieval monastery in Lousame, Spain.
The Monastery of San Xusto de Toxosoutos sits at the foot of the San Xusto River and features a Baroque parish church with an attached tower. The stone structure displays typical galician monastic architecture with elements from different periods.
In the 12th century, knights Froylan Alonso and Pedro Muniz de Carnota founded a monastery under the Benedictine rule, transforming an earlier Romanesque hermitage into a religious center. This transition marked the shift from a simple retreat to an important monastic complex in the region.
The monastery holds the designation of Cultural Heritage Site since 2004, representing the religious and architectural traditions of the galician region.
The site sits at about 350 meters in elevation and is accessible via the C.543 road near Noia. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear as the surrounding terrain is hilly and suitable for exploring the grounds and river areas.
The San Xusto River creates natural waterfalls near the monastery, including one about 6 meters high. These cascading falls are easily visible from the monastery grounds and offer a striking view of the landscape.
