Archaeological site of Los Calveros, Paleontological site complex in Pinilla del Valle, Spain.
The site contains five separate caves spread across about three hectares, holding archaeological remains from between roughly 120,000 and 40,000 years ago. The site offers guided tours during the summer excavation seasons, with free visiting days scheduled periodically for the public. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven ground and narrow cave passages when exploring the area.
One of the caves holds what researchers believe is the oldest documented burial of an infant in European history. This finding suggests that early people may have practiced rituals or held beliefs about death and caring for the deceased.
