Cascadas del Purgatorio, Double waterfall system in Rascafría, Spain
Cascadas del Purgatorio is a system of two waterfalls along the Arroyo de los Fósiles in the Sierra Norte near Rascafría. The upper and lower cascades form a connected water landscape in this forested mountain area.
The waterfalls belong to a landscape that has long been visited by people and held religious meaning in the region. Nearby, the monastery of El Paular was later built, which strengthened the cultural connection to the mountain area.
The name references religious ideas about purification that have deep roots in this mountain region. Today, visitors can see how the waterfalls fit into the walking life of the local community.
The path to both waterfalls follows marked forest trails and takes about two hours at a moderate pace. It is best to arrive early to find less crowded paths and better light for photographs.
The lower cascade changes its appearance significantly by season, making each visit a different experience. In spring with snowmelt the water flows powerfully, while in summer it appears gentler and less voluminous.
