Los Marteles, Volcanic caldera in Gran Canaria, Spain
Los Marteles is a volcanic caldera in eastern Gran Canaria with steep walls, a depth of about 80 meters, and a diameter of about 550 meters. Marked trails run through the area, leading to different viewpoints overlooking the landscape.
The caldera formed through a freatomagmatic eruption when molten lava met underground water sources. This volcanic formation is less than one million years old.
Native plant species like Canary Island pine and blue tajinaste grow throughout the reserve, showing what local vegetation looks like in this volcanic region.
The area is well marked with trails that offer different levels of difficulty for walkers. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, especially on warm days.
The caldera floor displays geometric patterns from centuries of farming by local growers. These hand-laid fields offer a glimpse into traditional cultivation methods used on the Canary Islands.
