Monument to Tirso de Molina, Madrid, Statue in the Embajadores district, Madrid, Spain
The Monument to Tirso de Molina is a statue in the Plaza de Tirso de Molina, in the Embajadores district of Madrid, Spain. Created by sculptor Rafael Vela del Castillo, it shows the playwright seated and is made of dark stone.
The statue was erected in 1943 to honor Tirso de Molina, a playwright and monk of the 17th century. The square where it stands was created in 1840 after a medieval monastery that previously occupied the site was demolished.
The statue shows Tirso de Molina seated, and the pedestal has the titles of some of his works carved into it. The square where it stands also hosts a flower market with eight small stalls, each named after one of his plays, including Don Juan.
The Plaza de Tirso de Molina is easy to reach on foot, and the metro station of the same name on Line 1 is right next to it. Walking through the nearby streets of Lavapiés makes it simple to discover the statue alongside the rest of the neighborhood.
Tirso de Molina was the creator of the Don Juan character, one of the most recognized figures in Western literature, despite being a monk himself. The square where the statue stands was once called Plaza del Progreso and was only later renamed after the writer.
