Church of Santo Cristo del Olivar, Madrid, Neo-Baroque Catholic church in central Madrid, Spain.
The Church of Santo Cristo del Olivar is a Neo-Baroque religious building located near the Atocha area in central Madrid. Its interior features a central nave topped with barrel vaults, side corridors separated by pillars, and an exterior of reddish brick that frames the entire structure.
Architect Enrique María Repullés designed and built the current structure between 1910 and 1919. It replaced an earlier chapel from 1647 that had fallen into considerable disrepair over the centuries.
The church displays two remarkable Baroque sculptures that visitors can see during their visit: a Christ figure by Manuel Pereira and a Virgin of the Rosary by Luis Salvador Carmona. These artworks shape the spiritual character of the interior space.
The building sits on Cañizares Street at number 4 and has functioned as a Dominican parish church since 1899. Visitors can enter during opening hours and should approach the interior with respect for the active religious space.
The exterior facade blends Renaissance and Neoclassical elements in an unexpected way, creating a striking contrast with the pure Neo-Baroque style of the interior. This eclectic approach makes the building architecturally unusual for its period.
