Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol

Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol, Gothic church in Montilla, Spain.

Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol is a Gothic church featuring three interior naves divided by pointed arches, with side chapels along the walls and a distinctive elliptical dome at the crossing. The interior layout creates a flowing space that directs attention toward the altar while maintaining balanced proportions throughout the structure.

Construction began in 1500 under the patronage of the first Marquis of Priego and was completed around 1550 according to Gothic architectural principles. The building emerged as one of Montilla's major religious structures during a period of urban growth in the region.

The building blends Mudejar design elements with Christian architecture, most visible in the tower where medieval building techniques from the Islamic tradition meet European Gothic forms. Visitors can observe this cultural fusion in the carved stonework throughout the structure.

The church is situated in the upper section of the town within the grounds of the former castle and serves as the main parish building. Its central location makes it easy to find, and visitors should remember that it functions as an active place of worship.

The baptistery contains a Gothic stone baptismal font carved with intricate detail that reflects master craftsmanship of the period. The San Juan Bautista chapel displays an octagonal coffered ceiling with a square central panel, showing how carefully each space within the church was designed and decorated.
