Laguna de Zóñar, Protected lake in Aguilar de la Frontera, Spain.
Laguna de Zóñar is a protected wetland spanning about 66 hectares with a central pool and two adjacent lagoons, where water reaches depths of 13 meters (42 feet). The site supports diverse ecosystems shaped by seasonal water level changes and surrounding vegetation.
The site received protected status in October 1984 and was included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance in 1989. This recognition established it as a significant conservation area within Spain.
The name Zóñar connects to an ancient Iberian settlement called Zúñiga that once stood in this region centuries ago. This historical link remains embedded in the place's identity today.
The wetland is accessible via a marked road from highway A-45 at kilometer 40, leading to parking facilities and a Visitor Center. Getting there is straightforward once you locate the signs from the main highway.
The site is the only natural water body in Andalusia where white-headed ducks rebounded from near extinction. This recovery of the rare species makes it particularly valuable for birdwatchers visiting the region.
