Castillo Anzur

Castillo Anzur is a medieval castle perched on a hilltop near Puente Genil in Cordoba province. The structure overlooks the Genil River valley and the surrounding countryside from its elevated position.

The castle was built in the 10th century by Moorish forces as a defensive stronghold. It remained strategically important through the medieval period and into the campaigns of the late 1400s when Christian armies advanced in the region.

The ruins show traces of different peoples who settled here across the centuries. Iberian, Roman, and Moorish communities left their marks through the remains and objects found during archaeological work at this site.

The site sits on a hillside and involves a short climb to reach the main ruins. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven ground since this is an archaeological site in a rural setting.

King Ferdinand the Catholic used the area around the castle to establish military camps during his campaigns against Granada in the 1480s. This connection to a pivotal moment in Christian expansion makes the location a key stop for understanding regional history.
