Historical American Exposition, International exhibition at Biblioteca Nacional and Archaeological Museum, Madrid, Spain
The Historical American Exposition was an international exhibition held in 1892 and 1893 at the National Library and Archaeological Museum in Madrid. The show brought together contributions from 19 countries and displayed objects and models that documented the history and cultures of the American continents.
The exhibition was organized in 1892 to mark 400 years since the European encounter with the Americas. It reflected growing interest in the cultures and history of American peoples during the late 1800s.
The Mexican section displayed scale models of pyramids from El Tajín and Xochicalco, while Costa Rica presented over 1,000 archaeological objects from Guayabo de Turrialba. These items allowed visitors to see the cultural achievements of pre-Columbian civilizations in Central America.
The exhibition spread across two cultural institutions located centrally in Madrid, each providing separate spaces for different exhibits. Visitors should allow time to move between the two locations and explore the distinct collections on display.
The archaeological finds from Costa Rica displayed there later traveled to the United States and became part of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This transatlantic journey made the collection one of the most widely traveled assemblies of its era.
